You must know the permit requirements when planning your visit to the mesmerizing Tso Moriri Lake. As a protected area, an Inner Line Permit is mandatory for all travelers. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Obtaining Your Permit: The process is convenient and can be completed online after you arrive in Leh, the gateway to this natural wonder.
2. Mandatory for All: Both Indian and foreign nationals are required to carry the Inner Line Permit while visiting Lake.
3. Exception for Residents: It’s important to note that Jammu Kashmir and Ladaresidents km are exempt from the Inner Line Permit requirement.
4. Restricted Citizens: Foreign nationals from China, Bangladesh & Pakistan are not allowed to travel to this place.

The Lake can be traveled from Leh via Taglang La Pass or Chungthang from Leh or via Tsaga La from Pangong Lake. We have discussed them in detail below. 

This is the most common route to Tso Moriri that most people take to visit. The total distance is about 230km and will take about 7 – 8 Hrs. This is the most recommended route as the road conditions are far better than other routes.

Leh – Upshi (47 Km) – Kumdok (54 Km) –  Chumathang (38 Km) – Mahe (24 Km) – Sumdo (16 Km) – Karzok or Tso Moriri (42 Km) making it a total of 215 Km.

• Continue your journey to Upshi from Karu, where the landscapes captivate.
• After Upshi, head to Kumdok, covering a distance of 19 kilometers.

• Post lunch, proceed to Mahe, a town surrounded by stunning vistas.
• Continue to Sumdo, a mere 10 kilometers from Mahe, and experience the gateway to the Changthang Plateau.
• Finally, embark on the last leg of your adventure, a 53-kilometer drive to reach your destination, either Korzok or Tsomoriri Lake, where the serene beauty of the lake and the surrounding landscapes await your arrival.

This route to Tsomoriri Lake is a thrilling adventure through picturesque landscapes, making it one of the most scenic journeys from Leh to Tsomoriri. However, due to its considerable length, it’s also the most time-consuming, requiring a minimum of 8 to 9 hours to reach the mountain lake. Along the way, you can explore two other pristine lakes, Tsokar Lake and Kyagar Tso Lake.

Leh – Upshi (47 km) – Rumtse (29 km) – Tanglang La (32 km) – Debring (15 km) – Tso Kar (31 km) – Sumdo (37km) – Kyagar Tso (23 km) – Karzok or Tso Moriri (20km) making it a total of 232 Km.
