On the road, it takes about 420 kilometers to get from Srinagar to Leh. It is recommended to split the trip into two days and spend the night at Kargil.
Anytime from mid-May to September, when the roads are open and the weather is favourable, is the best time to travel between Srinagar and Leh.
Due to significant snowfall, the Srinagar-Leh Highway is often closed from November to April each year.
Depending on the cause, the length of the closure varies.
In case of regular maintenance – the authorities typically reopen it by the afternoon.
In the case of Land Slides – The length of time it takes to reopen, however, depends on the severity of the landslide and might range from one day to up to three days or even a week.
In such cases, we recommend you take a flight from Srinagar to Leh as a backup plan.
By taking the road from Srinagar, you gradually gain altitude, which gives your body time to acclimate to the higher altitude.
No, vehicles from Srinagar are only allowed to go as far as Leh. The Leh Taxi Union doesn’t let outside vehicle visit places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso Lake.
In the same way, Vehicles from Leh can go up to Srinagar, but they can’t go sightseeing in places like Gulmarg or Pahalgam.
